Korean employee health insurance contributions are reconciled when actual annual remuneration is confirmed. The difference may be collected or refunded.
Why reconciliation happens
Monthly contributions can be based on an earlier reported remuneration amount. When actual pay for the year is confirmed, the insurer compares contributions due on that amount with what was already paid. Settlement amount = confirmed contributions − contributions already paid.
Timing
Employers report prior-year remuneration and the adjustment is commonly reflected in spring payroll. Review the year and month shown on your payslip rather than assuming it relates to current-month wages.
An example
If confirmed pay is higher than the reported base, additional employee health and long-term care contributions may be due. If it is lower, an adjustment or refund may result. The exact amount depends on rates and remuneration rules for that year.
Installments
A large additional amount may qualify for installment payment under the applicable procedure. Ask payroll or the National Health Insurance Service how the adjustment is being handled.
